Bringing your creative products from concept to reality
Materials & process engineering support for creative, product-based small businesses and non-profit orgs
-
Are you looking for better pricing on your raw materials? Or Google searching not really cuttin’ it?
Or more eco-friendly packaging from a supplier better aligned with your values?
Or hoping to find another small business nearby to support for a production step - especially ones that require expensive equipment, artisan expertise, or technical training that your business might be missing?
Leave it to me to do the digging for you, sorting through technical jargon and industry directories, to generate a list of at least 2 or 3 prospects to contact meeting your requirements, and info comparing them.
$300
+$200 if you’d like me to send requests for quotes on your behalf. You’ll receive info on each supplier + quotes

Not sure what inks are food-safe? Or if a bioplastic or textile you’ve found is truly biodegradable?
Or which alloys & finishes best resist all forms of corrosion for a product that WILL get wet? (Corrosion engineering is actually one of my specialties!)
Or maybe what alternatives to plywood would be easy to build WAY lighter makers/farmers market displays out of?
If you provide a list of requirements for your product (ex: must withstand X temperature, be UV-resistant, home compostable, max size, process/tool compatibility if applicable, etc.), I’ll let you know what materials I recommend, which meet those requirements, are compliant with applicable regulations, and will ensure durability for intended use.
$300/component or part
+See “Sourcing” for pricing if you need leads on where to find materials in the forms and quantities you need

This service provides you with recommendations for manufacturing methods, improving efficiency of artisan or handmade processes, or creating efficient systems for other processes, such as packing or creating market booth displays & inventory.
Whether you need help with design, process improvements, or scale-up, I’ll provide you with a recommendation and rationale!
$300
+See “Sourcing” if you’d like to be connected with some production partners (ex: artisans, machine shops/technicians, etc.)

Characterization of material properties like melting points, compostable certification, flammability, etc.
Do you need to confirm that your product has no PFAS/PFOA forever chemicals? Or that it's truly food-safe? Or that it’s waterproof, and not just water-resistant?
I’ll provide you with:
Descriptions of the right tests for your requirements, with rationale, test standards (associated with the appropriate regulations if applicable), and labs that provide that testing
Quotes from those labs, from RFQs written such that tests are performed correctly
Test reports with the requested information, translated into a non-technical summary that can be adapted for marketing claims
$1000 + direct payment to the lab for any testing
NOTE: Extra fee will apply if a test plan must be written for the lab testing

Maybe you’re a non-profit org that needs customized products made for fundraisers.
Maybe you're a baker, musician, or coffee shop owner that just needs promotional products as an extra revenue stream (and great marketing!). Well, you’re in luck!
No need to settle for promo goods with less-than-retail quality, or a print-on-demand site that's still kinda iffy on quality, and not effective at converting views into sales.
If you've got a design file already and a product in mind, let me know how many units you need, rough dimensions, number of colors per design, date needed, and I'll handle quoting for you!
$300* for:
1 - 3 quotes for you to choose from
Detailed list of info you’ll need to place your order
*Price does not include cost of your order, which would be paid directly to the production partner doing the customization for you
Need help with graphic design or illustration?
Guess what?! That's my other professional specialty! I can also recommend fellow artists if you prefer a different art style
Pricing for creating & licensing a custom, print-ready merch illustration starts at $600
Or if you already have web graphics that need to be adjusted to be print-ready (RGB to CMYK color conversion, vectorizing, replacing gradients or fine lines, etc.), that graphic design work starts at $300

Connecting your creativity to new technical solutions
Hi, I’m Irene!
Principal Materials & Process Engineer
+Artist/Product Designer
- Seattle & Virtual -
Rockets, space stations, and airplanes have been neat to work on in my career, but nowadays I’m truly MUCH MORE excited to help fellow creatives make more impact in their communities, via my consulting firm Hypha Nova. You’ve got product ideas - let me help make them a reality!
Thanks to my BS & MS in Materials Science & Engineering, I’m basically a friendly, walking encyclopedia of how all sorts of materials can be made into products, and how they will fail under various conditions. Let’s leverage my 13+ years of R&D, production support, and supplier management experience to make your products better together!
As a professional artist with a product-based small business of my own (Chroma Rex), I share your high standards of quality craftsmanship. Being able to bridge both creative and technical worlds means that I’m exactly the partner you need to translate all the technical jargon of production facilities and test labs, to get your artwork/design looking its best, with quotes in hand from ethical production partners.
Core Values
Reducing Environmental Impact
All materials will fail someday. Let me steer you to the ones that will last the longest for your application, or that will be the most sustainable option possible.
Uplifting People over Profit
Working only with community-focused, ethically-run production partners, with a preference for local-to-you suppliers (sometimes I will recommend international suppliers for certain products though).
Closing the Gap on Equitable Opportunity
Small business owners who identify as disabled, women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, veterans, or formerly-incarcerated are particularly encouraged to reach out. I would love to help you thrive!
For those who may be facing financial barriers to affording my services, I am occasionally willing to consider a trade of services or goods in some cases, if they align with my values or interests. I also offer free workshops through a local non-profit - sign up for my email list to be notified when those are scheduled! (scroll to the bottom)
